Schonbek takes a quantum leap
into contemporary lighting design
with Quantum and Plaza
PLATTSBURGH, NY, May 7, 2008 – Trend-sensitive interior designers are always looking for the next idea. Schonbek speaks to their desires with two new chandelier collections appearing this month in lighting showrooms across America.

Quantum: crystal squared
"Quantum" said Schonbek, "is a complex design made entirely of simple shapes. Squares and rectangles. Square and rectangular crystal jewels come together in great profusion to form square and rectangular chandeliers and pendants.
"These are technically exact, highly disciplined designs. Frames are stainless steel – laser cut and laser welded – and will never corrode. Crystal chains are held in place by a patented method at the top and bottom of the gallery, allowing no twisting or misalignment.
"Contrasting with this strictness of construction is the wild spectral brilliance of the Swarovski® crystal.
Plaza: infinite brilliance
"The circle is a symbol of infinity," said Schonbek, "and so we came ‘round to the idea of a crystal chandelier endlessly encircling itself. We called it Plaza.
"Despite its essential circularity, Plaza, like Quantum, is composed of square and rectangular crystal. The interaction between sweeping circular shapes and discrete angular shapes yields a fascinating complexity.
"As is the case with Quantum, the drama of Plaza is supported by an invisible, incorruptible, laser cut stainless steel frame. The arrangement of crystal is as meticulous as mathematics, the intention being to emanate as magnificent a display of prismatic brilliance as possible."
The sea of crystal octagons at the bottom of each circular slice of Plaza is held in place by a grid, and effectively hides the internal workings of the chandelier. A spectacular faceted crystal sphere with anchors and centers the design.
