The History of Crystal Chandeliers

The history of crystal chandeliers can be traced back to medieval times when they were first used to adorn the grand halls of castles and palaces. Initially, these chandeliers were simple arrangements of candles suspended from metal frames, perhaps ornamented with rock crystal quartz quarried from the earth. Over time, advancements in glassmaking techniques and metalwork led to the creation of more elaborate designs.

However, it was during the 18th century that crystal chandeliers truly came into their own. With the development of lead crystal, which had a higher refractive index, chandeliers began to reflect light with a dazzling brilliance previously unseen. European monarchs and nobility quickly adopted these magnificent fixtures, solidifying their association with luxury and grandeur.

The Craftsmanship Behind the Light

Handcrafted crystal chandeliers result from intricate and skilled craftsmanship that combines glass artistry, metalwork and design expertise. Artisans meticulously cut, shape and polish each crystal by hand, ensuring that the facets catch and reflect light in the most fascinating manner. The elements are then carefully attached to the sculpted glass or metal chandelier frame, a process demanding precision and patience.

Master metalworkers play an equally crucial role in the creation of these chandeliers. The frame, often made of brass or other high-quality materials, is carefully constructed to support the weight of the crystals while maintaining the desired aesthetic. The structure may be intricately designed, featuring elegant curves, elaborate patterns and ornate details that complement the crystals.

The Story of Schonbek Worldwide Lighting

The history of Schonbek is a tale of passion, innovation and artistry that has spanned generations.

In 1870, a young Bohemian immigrant named Adolph Schonbek established his crystal chandelier business in a small village. Adolph came from a family with a rich history in glass and crystal craftsmanship, and he was determined to carry on this legacy by creating exquisite lighting fixtures that showcased the utmost quality and artistry.

Adolph Schonbek quickly gained a reputation for his innovative designs and meticulous attention to detail. He introduced new crystal cutting and polishing techniques, allowing his chandeliers to emit breathtaking brilliance and sparkle. As word of his exceptional craftsmanship spread, his chandeliers found favor among European aristocracy and even adorned the grand palaces and royal courts of the time.

The turn of the 20th century brought significant changes, including geopolitical shifts due to World War I and II. The Schonbek family relocated their business to Montreal, Canada and finally to Plattsburgh, NY in 1972, where they continue to produce the world’s finest crystal lighting. Schonbek Worldwide Crystal Lighting, owned by WAC Lighting since 2021, remains steadfast in its commitment to preserve the time-honored techniques that make its chandeliers so exceptional. The company continues to employ highly skilled artisans who design, handcraft and meticulously assemble every chandelier with the same dedication to quality that has been a hallmark of the brand since its inception.
